Quantification of left atrial volume using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging: comparison of left atrial volume index measurements using the Simpson's and bi-plane area-length methods

چکیده
Background Increased left atrial volume index (LAVI) has been shown to be an independent predictor of hard cardiovascular events. It can be determined by calculating left atrial (LA) volume through the use of either Simpson’s method or area-length method and indexing it to body surface area (BSA). Although there is no standardized method of calculating LA volume using Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging (CMR), the aforementioned methods, which were originally validated for 2-dimensional echocardiography, have been used. We sought to assess the agreement between LAVI, obtained with the use of cardiac gated steady state free precession cine pulse sequence of contiguous short axis slices (LAVI1) and area-length method (LAVI2). Methods Thirty-six patients (28 males, age 47.6 ± 16.7 years) who had adequate CMR imaging to analyze LA volumes using the two methods were retrospectively identified. LAVI1 was calculated using Simpson’s stack of discs method on short axis cine images (acquired as 8 mm slices with inter slice gap of 2 mm or 6 mm slices with no gap). LAVI2 was measured using the American Society of Echocardiography guidelines. Qmass software (Medis) was used to trace LA areas and volumes.

Left atrial volume quantification using cardiac MRI in atrial fibrillation: comparison of the Simpson's method with biplane area-length, ellipse, and three-dimensional methods.
PURPOSE Left atrial volume is an important predictor of future arrhythmias, and it can be assessed by several different methods. Simpson's method is well accepted as a reference standard, although no standardization exists for cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). We aimed to compare the estimations of left atrial volumes obtained by the Simpson's method with three other methods. MATERIALS AND ME...
متن کاملComparison of area-length method by echocardiography versus full volume quantification by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging for the assessment of left atrial volume
Background Left atrial (LA) size is a known predictor of adverse cardiovascular events. Echocardiography is the modality of choice for the evaluation of atrial size however cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) remains the gold standard for cardiac chamber volume quantification. We sought to compare atrial volume assessment using the biplane area-length method by echocardiography with full v...
متن کاملAssessment of Left Atrial Volume by Magnetic Resonance in Patients with Permanent Atrial Fibrillation. The Short-axis Method vs. the Single Plane Area-length Method
Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with enlargement of the left atrium (LA). The LA volume can be assessed by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). The standard CMR method for measuring the LA volume is the shortaxis (SA) method, which is time consuming, hence little useful in the clinical setting. For this reason more simplified methods have been developed to assess the LA volume. ...
متن کاملThe Correlation between Left and Right Ventricular Ejection Fractions in Patients with Ischemic Heart Disease, Documented by Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Introduction: The correlation between right and left ventricular ejection fractions (RVEF and LVEF, respectively) has been studied in only a small number of patients with a marked decrease in RVEF and LVEF. The aim of the present study was to compare LVEF and RVEF in patients with ischemic heart disease. RVEF and LVEF were measured by Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) imaging. Materials a...

Background Left atrium (LA) volume and function are important markers of cardiovascular disease. LA volume can be assessed by several different methods. We aimed to compare the estimations of LA volume by the Simpson’s method and the modified bipl...
